These small booklets are a travelogue for your journey with a clear opinion of what others would consider progress (\u201cTesco have breezed into town, but personally we will still beat a path to Vermeulen\u2019s delicatessen \u2026\u201d). The maps indicate towpath quality, laundries, moorings (private, prohibited, public), bridges, fish and chip shops, post offices, winding holes, locks, waterpoints, showers, pump outs and much more. The maps don\u2019t necessarily progress in the direction you\u2019re traveling and each map is usually positioned to the landscape orientation of the book, meaning north is rarely up. These are closer to actual maps and you can find them on Amazon. They make a good companion to the\u00a0<i>Pearson\u2019s Canal Companion<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;\">Books<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m currently reading Derek Pratt\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/great-waterways-journeys-9781472905857\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Great Waterways Journeys:\u00a020 Glorious Routes Circling England, By Canal and River<\/em><\/a>. It\u2019s a great guide when planning your next ring route. I had to order it from Amazon UK because the American\u00a0edition won\u2019t be ready until summer 2016. I really hope the DVD will either be available on YouTube or to purchase.<\/p>\n<p>(Just an update on this; the\u00a0episodes of <em>Canals: The Making of a Nation<\/em> are available on YouTube but are nearly unwatchable, being only a quarter\u00a0size with a murky overlay and muffled audio. The companion book is written by\u00a0David Bartley. Sergeant is a fun character and the episodes are very short and with some luck, you might find them on YouTube. A sample issue is available through the website and back issues can be read online. It is the perfect magazine for a beginning gongoozler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"first-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/bttRsE\"><span class=\"hyperlink-emphasis\">Waterways Wo<\/span><span class=\"hyperlink-emphasis\">r<\/span><span class=\"hyperlink-emphasis\">ld<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is another print magazine that can also be read online with a subscription.
