Guides<\/h2>\n

It all starts with LTC Rolt\u2019s book Narrow Boat<\/em><\/a> written during the outbreak of World War II and published in 1944. Tom Rolt\u2019s account of his and his wife\u2019s\u00a0four-month voyage on the Oxford, Grand Union and Trent & Mersey canals\u00a0was the seed that eventually grew into the canal renaissance we now enjoy.\u00a0The book was a last look at the canals that had fallen into disrepair and is a lament on the world that was lost, but its nostalgia helped\u00a0create the Inland Waterways Association<\/a>.
\n\"Pearson\u2019s<\/a><\/p>\n

Your single most invaluable resource for many canals is a\u00a0Pearson\u2019s Canal Companion<\/a><\/em>. These small booklets are a travelogue for your journey with a clear opinion of what others would consider progress (\u201cTesco have breezed into town, but personally we will still beat a path to Vermeulen\u2019s delicatessen \u2026\u201d). The maps indicate towpath quality, laundries, moorings (private, prohibited, public), bridges, fish and chip shops, post offices, winding holes, locks, waterpoints, showers, pump outs and much more. You\u2019ll have descriptions of towns and restaurants that are a little arch, like \u201cBray: Smug gastronomic cornucopia famous for its 17th Century vicar and his weathercock attitude to politics and religion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"collins-nicholson-guide\"<\/a>Despite the attitude (or perhaps because of it), you\u2019ll enjoy the companion, although the maps can take a bit of getting used to. The maps don\u2019t necessarily progress in the direction you\u2019re traveling and each map is usually positioned to the landscape orientation of the book, meaning north is rarely up. The\u00a0Pearson\u2019s\u00a0<\/i>guides are available on Amazon.<\/p>\n

\"great-waterways-journeys\"<\/a>Another resource is the\u00a0Collins\/Nicholson Waterways Guides<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Waterways Map\u00a0<\/i>of Great Britain. These are closer to actual maps and you can find them on Amazon. They make a good companion to the\u00a0Pearson\u2019s Canal Companion<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Books<\/h2>\n

I\u2019m currently reading Derek Pratt\u2019s Great Waterways Journeys:\u00a020 Glorious Routes Circling England, By Canal and River<\/em><\/a>. It\u2019s a great guide when planning your next ring route. There are many great pictures and I especially like the maps on the inside covers and the fold-over flaps.<\/p>\n

\"canals-the-making-nation\"<\/a>Within a couple of weeks, I should also be receiving Canals: The Making of a Nation<\/em> by Liz McIvor, which is the companion book to the BBC series<\/a> of the same name and which I believe will be a look at the history of the canals. I had to order it from Amazon UK because the American\u00a0edition won\u2019t be ready until summer 2016. I really hope the DVD will either be available on YouTube or to purchase.<\/p>\n

(Just an update on this; the\u00a0episodes of Canals: The Making of a Nation<\/em> are available on YouTube but are nearly unwatchable, being only a quarter\u00a0size with a murky overlay and muffled audio. Worse, you can’t even buy the series from the BBC store.)<\/p>\n

\"barging-round-britain\"<\/a>Barging Round Britain<\/em>, on the other hand, is an ITV series with \u00a0journalist and TV presenter John Sergeant. The companion book is written by\u00a0David Bartley. Sergeant is a fun character and the episodes are very short and with some luck, you might find them on YouTube. The books seems to be much more in-depth.<\/p>\n

Publications<\/h2>\n

\"towpath-talk\"Towpath Talk\u00a0<\/span><\/a>is a free waterway-related newspaper that you can find at marinas, tourist bureaus or canal trust visitor centers, or you can subscribe to have it delivered or you can\u00a0read it free online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Narrowboat, the Inland Waterways Heritage Magazine<\/span><\/a>, offers an historical look at the canals. A sample issue is available through the website and back issues can be read online. It is the perfect magazine for a beginning gongoozler.<\/p>\n

Waterways Wo<\/span>r<\/span>ld<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is another print magazine that can also be read online with a subscription. It\u2019s a very attractive publication but like\u00a0Towpath Tal<\/span>k<\/span>, caters more to those who call a narrowboat home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
