{"id":1771,"date":"2016-12-30T03:07:34","date_gmt":"2016-12-30T03:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/narrowboatingforbeginners.com\/wordpress\/?p=1771"},"modified":"2017-01-19T15:55:38","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T15:55:38","slug":"birmingham-canal-navigation-society-may-explorer-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/narrowboatingforbeginners.com\/wordpress\/birmingham-canal-navigation-society-may-explorer-cruise\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham Canal Navigation Society May Explorer Cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m not in the habit of posting every event of every canal society, but as I will be in Birmingham during some of these events I thought I would post this:<\/p>\n<h4>Friday 12 May 2017 &#8211; Friday 19 May 2017<\/h4>\n<h5>Explorer Cruise May 2017<\/h5>\n<p>Experience the northern reaches of the Birmingham Canal Navigation system with fellow boaters and visit the CRT workshops at Bradley, including historical talk and presentation en route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday evening 12th May, meet at Wolverhampton<\/strong><br \/>\nBoats to meet and moor on visitor moorings either side of Broad Street bridge. An informal evening gathering on the embankment at side of moorings above the Wolverhampton top lock is planned.<br \/>\nEvening get together at the Great Western pub in Sun Street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1 Saturday 13th May, to Pelsall Junction<br \/>\n<\/strong>(12 miles 0 locks 5 hrs)<br \/>\nBoats to leave Wolverhampton and turn on the Wyrley &amp; Essington canal, travel through Sneyd, Goscote, Little Bloxwich and moor at Pelsall Common.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2 Sunday 14th May, to Longwood<\/strong>, Daw End canal<br \/>\n(11 miles 0 locks 6 hrs)<br \/>\nLeave Pelsall Junction and continue to Catshill Junction, visit Anglesey Basin, return to Catshill Junction and take the Daw End canal. Moor at the Longwood Junction where a Chineese take away evening and Historical talk\/presentation is planned at the Longwood Boat Club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3 Monday 15th May, to Moorcroft Junction<\/strong><br \/>\n(8 miles 9 locks 6 hrs)<br \/>\nLeave the Longwood Boat Club and descend the Rushall locks (assisted by BCNS lockwheelers), turn right at Rushall Junction onto the Tame Valley canal to Ocker Hill. Turn right on the Walsall canal and moor at Moorcroft Junction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4 Tuesday 16th May, to Walsall<\/strong><br \/>\n(4 miles 0 locks 2-3 hrs)<br \/>\nA morning 1.5 mile leisurely walk to the Bradley workshops lock gate manufacturing facility. During this walk and visit we will be joined by a local canal historian.<br \/>\nWe plan to walk on a well defined footpath up the remaining lock flight levels, then on the original canal embankment to the Bradley workshops where we will be met by CRT staff and allowed to tour the lock gate manufacturing facility.<br \/>\nAfter the visit, an optional detour around the Wednesbury Oak Loop and Gospel Oak Branch will take us back to our moorings.<br \/>\nWe plan to leave moorings early afternoon and travel to Walsall town basin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 5 Wednesday 17th May, to Wednesfield Junction<\/strong><br \/>\n(8 miles 8 locks 6-7 hrs )<br \/>\nLeave Walsall town basin and ascend Walsall locks (here again we will be assisted by BCNS lock-wheelers), turn left at Birchills Junction and continue on the Wyrley &amp; Essington canal. Moor in or around the Bentley Arm outside the Nickelodeon pub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 6 Thursday 18th May, to Tipton<\/strong><br \/>\n(7 miles 0 locks 2-3 hrs)<br \/>\nFrom Wednesfield Junction continue on to Horseley Fields Junction then turn left on the Birmingham Old Main Line and continue towards Tipton. Moor adjacent to the Neptune Centre at Tipton Green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 7 Friday 19th May, to Titford<\/strong><br \/>\n(4 miles 6 locks 3-4 hrs)<br \/>\nMorning historical talk to be held at the Tipton library.<br \/>\nAfter talk, leave Tipton Green and continue back towards Birmingham on the Old Main Line to Oldbury Junction.
