It’s about a half-mile walk and wouldn’t be difficult if I weren’t hauling luggage. From the bike rental, I have to ride to Hatters Hostels where I’m staying the first two nights of my trip. Hatters is in the Jewellery Quarter and by bike, Google Maps doesn’t have a very direct route to the hostel because the A4400 / Queensway / A38 is in the way. Fortunately there’s a ready-made bike path in the form of the canals and I will travel there by following the Digbeth Branch and then the Birmingham and Fazeley canals.

I’ve never stayed at a hostel before, so this should be an experience, although somewhat tempered by having a private room and en suite bathroom. I may have time to take a shower before going to a meeting of the Birmingham Canal Navigation Society at the Titford Pump House, which appropriately enough is on the Titford Canal, a branch line of the Old Main Line Canal.

Friday May 5

I’m to meet Andy Munro, author of Going for a Balti: The Story of Birmingham’s Signature Dish, possibly for lunch somewhere in the Balti Triangle (marked above on the map). I also hope to have an opportunity to explore the Birmingham canals like the Old and New Main Lines, but I may have to take a quick trip down to Bournville that day. Friday will be busy, but luckily so many of the things I want to see are clustered at the intersection of the main lines, the Worcs & B’ham and the Birmingham and Fazeley. Just going to pick up my bike Thursday I’ll pass by the Bullring shopping area that includes the bizarre Selfridges (flashbacks of The Corbomite Maneuver) and the quaint St. Martin in the Bull Ring church. I’ll want morning light and sunrise is 5:27, so Saturday will be a long day. I will ride from Birmingham to Droitwich Spa and spend the next two nights at Phepson Farm Cottages, a nearby bed and breakfast. That’s about a 20-mile ride Saturday and I’ll have a lot of interesting demands on my time. I would like to ride through Bournville Village, the Cadbury company town that’s still being administered by the trust George Cadbury established in 1900. There’s also the Lapworth Geology Museum and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham.

Next is Kings Norton Junction where the North Stratford Canal joins the Worcs & B’ham, set off by the picturesque former toll house. I’m sure I’ll be spending a lot of time photographing the bridge and the toll house and the intimidating guillotine gates that guard the Stratford Canal.

The next attraction is also an obstacle to my path, the 1.5-mile-long Wast Hill Tunnel. I’m hoping I can catch a ride on a narrowboat going through the canal, which should take about 45 minutes. If I can’t, I’ll have to detour around the tunnel, but some cyclists have mentioned the anti-social nature of some of the residents of the Hawkesley Estate (there are three housing estates south of Kings Norton). I can either take Redditch Road (the A441) to the north or Longdales Road to the south and I’d love to hear some recommendations on the best route. The southern route skirts open country and I think would be the more attractive path.

After the Wast Hill Tunnel I’ll encounter the Shortwood and Tardebigge tunnels, but the detours around those are much easier and direct. After Tardebigge, of course, I’ll encounter the longest flight of locks in the UK. Starting at Lock 58 (58 being the nickname of the Worcs & B’ham), I’ll ride by 30 more locks to Lock 29. (NOTE: I’ve always been suspicious of the rather large gap between Lock 57 and 58 and suspect someone wanted a nice, round number.) If I stop to photograph every single lock, I’ll never get to my destination, so I will have to push on. Although I can average 10 mph on a concrete or tarmac (or metalled) bike path, I think 6–8 mph is a better estimate on a dirt towpath and even slower if it’s muddy and raining.

I hope to arrive at the junction of the Droitwich and Worcs & B’ham canals sometime between 5 and 6 pm and have dinner at the Eagle & Sun pub. From there it will be a 2¾-mile ride to Phepson Farm. If the weather and my legs are willing, however, I might ride back to the canal after checking in at the bed and breakfast so that I might get an evening photo of the water.

I hope at some point to ride a little way on the Droitwich canals and to tour the Salt Museum at the city’s tourist bureau.

Sunday May 7

Worcester Cathedral

I’d like to take it easy Sunday, but the complicated schedule of the various attractions in Worcester (some are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) means another early start. I would like to climb the tower at Worcester Cathedral so that I might have an aerial photograph of the city. The cathedral is also interesting because of its part during the English Civil Wars and being the burial place of King John of Magna Carta and Robin Hood, and Prince Arthur, Henry VIII’s brother. I also want to visit the Commandery, a building that has had many roles and during the Civil Wars was the last stronghold of Charles II. If possible, I will also ride alongside the River Severn to Powick Bridge, where the first major cavalry engagement in the wars took place. I plan an early night’s sleep back at Phepson Farm.

I should point out that sometime over the weekend or Monday or Tuesday, I hope to meet with members of the Worcester Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society, either at Alvechurch, Droitwich Spa or both. There are a number of boat hires on the canal including Angl0Welsh just north of the Tardebigge Tunnel, Black Prince and Viking Afloat at Lowesmoor Wharf in Worcester. It’s a daunting ride for me because 30 miles is pretty much the longest I ride in a day, but I plan to stop for lunch either in Astwood or Sambourne and replenish my energy. At Wilmcote, I can follow the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal another three miles to the home of the Bard.
