I would be retracing my ride of the previous day until I got to Kings Norton and the Wast Hill Tunnel, about which I was a little nervous.

The tunnel, which is about a mile and a half long (2,726 yards/2,493 meters), is a fun but spooky adventure on a narrowboat, but because there’s no towpath1 through the tunnel I would have to go aboveground. The temperature in my room at the hostel must have been in the 90s when I’d returned from my dinner with Andy. I told Philippa the night desk clerk and she battled with heat registers, control panels and even moved part of a wall in the lobby to turn some knob. That finally stopped the heat, but it took some time for the room to cool. Sometime during the night, however, the heat returned, making for a miserable night.

Consequently I was miserable in the morning and the weather—cool and misty with dull, gray skies—didn’t help. Once I started riding, however, my mood and the weather improved. Although threatening in the morning, it never really rained that day. By 10 am I made Kings Norton, where the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal meets the Worcester & Birmingham.

Worcester & Birmingham Canal

Like every canal ever built, the Worcs & B’ham Canal was a compromise. Worcester investors were the primary proponents of the canal, eager to reduce the cost of transporting Black Country coal to the city. An Act of Parliament authorizing the canal was obtained in 1791 and construction began in 1792 from the northern end. The canal didn’t reach Worcester until 1815 due to water supply problems; sub-standard lock and bridge construction; and cost overruns. These problems required additional rounds of financing and Parliamentary approval, further delaying progress.

The canal is 30 miles long, drops 428 feet from Birmingham to Worcester and is supplied by the Edgbaston, Cofton, Bittel and Tardebigge reservoirs. The northern half of the canal was cut to accommodate boats wider than the present-day seven-foot-wide narrowboat. All the bridges on the northern half are large enough for a ten-foot-wide boat and all the tunnels on the canal are wide enough for two narrowboats to pass.

Once it came time to dig the first lock, however, the prospect of making 58 wide locks proved too much for the owners. The remainder of the canal was made to accommodate narrowboats only.

The present top lock, number 58, replaced an experimental human-powered boatlift. Boats would have entered a caisson and then two men turning a windlass and aided by counterweights would have lifted or lowered the 64-ton caisson. It actually worked but apparently no one believed it would last. Its removal meant lock 58 had to be unusually deep at 11 feet.

Although the arrival of the canal in Worcester was greeted with much fanfare, the canal’s heyday was short lived once the railways arrived. For a while the canal company received rent from the Midland Railway for rights of way needed for the Birmingham West Suburban Railway, but in 1868, the canal company went into receivership. The canal itself was temporarily saved in 1874 when the company that owned the successful Gloucester & Sharpness Canal bought it.

The Cadbury Chocolate company ultimately saved the canal, using it to ship chocolate crumb—a mixture of sugar, milk and cocoa liquor—from the Severn to the Bournville factory. In February 1961, chocolate crumb was delivered to the Cadbury factory for the last time aboard the Olive, a “Severner” narrowboat. After that final trip the Olive was cut in half to make two pleasure boats.

Thankfully an original Cadbury crumb boat survives. The Mendip, built in 1948, was restored beginning in 2009 with a grant from the chocolate company, and in 2011 it revisited Bournville. The boat, which could carry a 25-ton load, now resides at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, near Liverpool.

The surrounding trees provide a tranquil setting for the former toll house and the arched bridge over the Worcs & B’ham. I could easily ignore the faded graffiti on the somewhat battered bridge, evidence of a few wayward narrowboats. Eventually hunger intruded on my appreciation of beauty (yes, this is a theme). My breakfast at the hostel was already forgotten, so I asked a passing cyclist if she knew of somewhere to eat.

The former toll house at Kings Norton Junction has a reproduction of a sign that list tolls for specific cargoes. I decided to push on rather than stop to eat, thinking I could have a later lunch at the Weighbridge in Alvechurch.

Map: Kings Norton to Alvechurch

The Redditch Road was busy, but I stuck to the sidewalk and I was never threatened by hooligans. I felt pretty silly about my baseless fears and was making good time on the road. I should have followed the Redditch/Birmingham Road all the way to the canal, but when I was planning the route, I saw that Lea End Lane rejoined the canal close enough to the south tunnel portal for a photograph.

This was one of the few instances where Google Maps failed me, or more correctly, I failed to correctly interpret the Google Maps terrain view. Lea End Lane does cross the canal, but I should have appreciated how deep the cut is. It was 25 feet from the road down to the canal and although there was a gate that indicated a path, it would be stupid to attempt it. Naturally I went for it, both because I was loathe to backtrack to the Birmingham Road and because I thought it would make a good story.

First I took the two panniers and my camera bag down the slope on separate trips. Then I took the bike down, which was more difficult because I didn’t have my hands free to hold on to tree roots or the side of the bridge. I ended up sliding down the last part with the bike on top of me.

I reattached the equipment to the bike and took pictures of the portal and congratulated myself on surviving my foolish descent. As I prepared to leave, however, I realized I was missing a glove, which meant another ascent and descent to find it (actually two up/downs because I missed the glove the first time).

Eventually I was ready to resume my ride but it was immediately obvious the towpath to the south of the tunnel was very different from what I’d experienced so far. Until Kings Norton the towpath had been paved in some fashion, but here it was a single, dirt track.2 It returned to paved south of the Birmingham Road/A441, then became a wider dirt track near Lower Bittell Reservoir and then back to a single, dirt track. I was informed they’d just stopped serving food, but I could have a pork pie if I wanted. Inquiring as to the delectability of a pork pie, I was shown a freezer drawer of wrapped pies and told they could microwave one for me in a matter of minutes.

I declined, thinking I deserved a much grander meal, and resolved to eat when I reached the Eagle & Sun pub at Hanbury Wharf near Droitwich. I did ask to use the toilet, even though a sign said it was reserved for paying customers. Again permission was kindly granted. I began to realize this was turning into a good scam, ask for food when it wasn’t being served and then ask to use the toilet.

By the way, the Worcester Birmingham & Droitwich Canal Society meets at the Weighbridge. The Crown Inn  is just to the north, also on the canal, and there are several pubs and restaurants in Alvechurch proper.

After leaving the Weighbridge I resolved to ride as quickly as possible, but I still had two big obstacles in my way. The first was Shortwood Tunnel and the second Tardebigge Tunnel. I was pretty sanguine about these, however, because the path around them was so obvious from Google Maps.

<figure id="attachment_2022" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2022" Satellite views showed trimmed, green fields but when I arrived I saw a sea of yellow flowers, reminding me of the opening for Pushing Daisies or Wordsworth’s I Wandered Lonely as Cloud (thanks moose and squirrel!). It was magical and any worry I had about the trip faded away. I’d been worried about my stamina, my photography skills and the expense of my enterprise, but all that vanished in the pure joy of riding a bike along a canal. I was combining one of my oldest joys with one of my newest. It brought me back to growing up in San Antonio and riding my bike for hours and suddenly realizing I didn’t know where the hell I was. And it reminded me of my best dreams of following a river to who knows where.

I felt so utterly alone in that field and yet connected to everything. It was one of those moments when you feel the universe has arranged for you—and just you—to be there at that exact moment in time to witness how wonderful life is. I hoped an overhead satellite might take a picture of the field just then and forever imbue that image with my joy.

I returned to the towpath but just after the AngloWelsh narrowboat hire I left it again to go around Tardebigge (pronounced TAR-dee-big) Tunnel (.33 miles/580 yards/530 meters). Unfortunately going around this tunnel is complicated by the Bromsgrove Highway/A448. I had to ride south alongside the A448 on B4096/Hewell Lane until coming to the Alcester Road/ B4184, which goes under the A448.

I should have remained on the Alcester (pronounced ULL-ster) Road all the way to the canal, but I stupidly asked another cyclist for directions. He gave me a perfectly valid route, but it deposited me between Lock 58 and 57. This meant I missed a chance to photograph the top lock and more importantly to use the restroom at the CRT facilities there.

St. Bartholomew’s

I was so focused on my route I barely noticed St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church  as I rode back to the canal after my detour around Tardebigge Tunnel. There may have been a church on the site since the Norman Conquest, but the present church dates to 1777. The previous church, which collapsed in 1775, had the distinction of the chancel being in Warwickshire while the main part of the church was in Worcestershire. A Victorian restoration repaired an inconvenience that required parishioners to climb over the backs of some pews and an arrangement that had some pews facing away from the pulpit.

I was told the very delicate needle spire was an homage to the needle industry in nearby Redditch, which I can’t confirm but seems logical. After all there’s the Glover’s Needle (or St. Andrew’s Spire) in Worcester, honoring the glove industry in that town. If you visit Redditch, you could visit the Forge Mill Needle Museum and ask.

Spurred by hunger and the need to pee, I rode down the canal as fast as practical, aided by the gradient provided by the Tardebigge flight of 30 locks. Canals are generally flat, but the flight drops the waterway 220 feet over two-and-a-quarter miles. It’s not a smooth gradient, of course, dropping about seven feet at every lock and giving a tired cyclist a much-needed boost when traveling south on the canal.

The towpath is just a dirt track along the flight but with relatively little tree cover and no recent rain the surface was dry and packed. Boats shouldn’t moor within a flight unless there’s a queue at a lock and traffic was light. So I didn’t need to slow for moored boats, only when I went under bridges.

Map: Tardebigge to Stoke Prior

From Tardebigge to Hanbury went by in a blur except for one incident as I approached the Hanbury moorings—a deer suddenly jumped in and swam west across the canal, clambering up the bank on the non-towpath side. I should have waited because I was hoping to eat at a carvery somewhere on the trip, but I was hungry and I also wanted to check in at the bed and breakfast before dark.

Instead I ordered a steak and ale pie with new potatoes and a half-pint of Guinness. I was also persuaded to try a taste of an ale, but I had no intention of finishing it. I’m actually allergic to alcohol. I blush immediately and if I drink more than a glass of beer, my fingers swell and my heart pounds. I can only drink beer, not wine or hard liquor.

To my surprise, however, apart from a mild blush the Guinness didn’t affect me. It helped that I’d had a full meal, of course, but my husband suggests that the fact I was essentially at sea level was a bigger factor. My meal was deeply satisfying and I even drank some of the ale, which was good. was on the road east to Phepson Farm. It was less than three miles, first on the busy two-lane B4090/Salt Way. Luckily there was a narrow sidewalk all the way to Goosehill Lane, where I turned south to the B&B. Goosehill Lane was two-lane (there was a lane divider) but with no sidewalk or shoulder. The ride was mostly flat except for a hill, which made me walk the bike, just before the B&B.

Phepson Farm appeared very much as the photos on the website promised and if anything even more charming. I passed by a corral with a grazing horse whose name I later learned is Freddy. A knock on the front door of the farmhouse quickly brought Tricia Havard to greet me. She immediately asked if I’d like a cup of coffee or tea. My recollection is that while saying this she was surrounded by a halo and accompanied by a choir of angels. In response to my grateful affirmative, she said she’d make me a cup of coffee while I took my bags to my room.

My room in the former stables was large, clean and cosy, made much cozier because I’d booked a room with a small bed, meaning I had much more room for my two panniers and myself. After locking up my bike, putting away my stuff and washing my face I went back to the sitting room of the house. Tricia brought me a small pot of coffee and some biscuits and I felt very civilized sitting on the sofa, surrounded by family photos, a piano and copies of Cotswold Life on the coffee table.

Worried about the need for frequent restroom stops, I hadn’t had coffee that morning. Even though I was worried about sleeping, I think that cup of coffee after a nice meal relaxed me. And, in fact, I had the best night’s sleep of my entire trip, passing out when my head hit the pillow and sleeping until the alarm duck on my iPad woke me the next morning.

<< Back 1. In the days of horse-drawn narrowboats, bargees would have to “leg” boats through tunnels with no towpaths. They’d extend planks over the sides of the boat, lie on their backs and use their feet to propel the boat through the tunnel.

<< Back 2. The towpath always seems of poor quality near tunnels, often embedded with bits of cast-off brick probably left over from the construction of the tunnel

<< Back 3. The dead arm on the canal came about when the path of the canal was moved during the construction of the M42. The entrance to the dead arm is blocked by buoys.

<< Back 4. I can’t really complain about the towpath on the Worcs & B’ham. Had it been raining or had recently rained, I’d be moaning about the mud, but of my 11 days in the Midlands, I only had one rainy day. The area was actually in a bit of a drought.

<< Back 5. The terrain and the straightness and alignment of the Shortwood Tunnel allows sunlight to shine from one end of the tunnel to the other one day a year.

On Saturday my goal was to go south from Birmingham, following the canal to Hanbury Wharf, just east of Droitwich

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[13,14

post-1964","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-canals-waterways","category-worcester-birmingham

https://i0.wp.com/narrowboatingforbeginners.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/gas-street-basin.jpg?fit=2500%2C610
["GET
