Roundabouts
For those brave enough to drive on the left-hand side of the road, you might want to brush up on the rules of the road and how to negotiate roundabouts.
You can read the official Highway Code online or download it to your computer or smartphone.
Turn-by-turn directions
If you rent a car in the UK, I very much recommend you get a navigation system with turn-by-turn directions. Negotiating a roundabout is easier with a snooty received pronunciation voice telling you—“In 200 yards, exit left at the roundabout and take the first exit. Proceed on the A16 for two miles.” In my experience, it takes at least three people to make it through a roundabout: the driver, someone to remind the driver to keep to the left and another to track progress on a map.
Limitations
Unfortunately navigation systems do have their limitations, especially when you try to search for a somewhat obscure address like a bed and breakfast in the middle of nowhere. For those times, you can rely on the Google maps you saved to your tablet or phone. Even when offline, the GPS in your device can show you the route to your destination or act as a double-check to the navigation system, which doesn’t always show the most direct route.
