CRT promoting canals for beginners
I received a request to mention a Canal & River Trust promotion: Holidays for first-time boaters. The story at the CRT website lists eight waterway journeys and I think they’re very good choices: the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in Wales; the Ashby Canal; Birmingham, with too many canals to list separately; the Llangollen; the Caldon Canal through the Peak District; Bath and the Kennet & Avon Canal; and the North Oxford Canal.
My husband and I and our friends have done two of these canals—the Llangollen and Kennet & Avon—and I’m busy writing about my bike trip along the canals of the Midlands. And I’ve either recommended to others or am planning to travel the Monmouthshire & Brecon, the Ashby and the Oxford. The Ashby would be quite fun as it passes Bosworth Field.
Our next boat trip will be next fall when we travel the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, which is perfect for beginners at about 30 miles long and only six locks and with a number of hire locations along its length. The pictures other boaters have sent me of the canal look beautiful; and as an added bonus, the canal was also visited this June by Timothy West and Prunella Scales of Great Canal Journeys, the Channel 4 series that follows these veteran actors on the canals of the British Isles and around the world.
